In what is hopefully the first of many, Henry Butcher Asset Auctioneers unveils its first ever Peranakan-themed auction, to be held on 6 November 2016 at Galeri Prima NSTP, Balai Berita, Kuala Lumpur.
Henry Butcher Malaysia is apparently on double duty on the date, as another auction – on Malaysian and Southeast Asian Art by Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers – is to happen on the same day.
Themed “Treasures of the Peranakan World and Straits Chinese”, the auction is hopefully the start of an annual affair for Peranakan art lovers and collectors.
Assisting Henry Butcher on this auction is guest curator and advisor Henry Bong, J.P. (Kelantan), CEO and Founder of Pucuk Rebung. Bong is a Peranakan himself, originating from Sarawak, and is a highly-respected authority on Peranakan culture and art.

In the two weeks leading to the auction, visitors get a chance to view all 91 lots on auction, which comprise over 600 carefully curated Peranakan artefacts.
On the night of 26 October, Galeri Prima housed invited guests, where they got an exclusive look on all the lots, with some arriving early with pens on hand, jotting down their observations.

According to Tang Chee Meng, Chief Operating Officer of Henry Butcher Asset Auctioneers, the auction was built on collectors’ interest in Peranakan ware.

“With the immense interest shown for Peranakan porcelain ware which was included for the first time during our art auction held on 21st September 2014, we thought why not we take on the delightful task of organising a Peranakan-centric auction to complement the efforts of our colleagues at HB Art Auctioneers,” he comments.
Visitors can view all the lots in Galeri Prima from 26 October to 5 November – a day before the auction. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
