Of Peranakan and Creative Arts

A look into creative works of Peranakan heritage.

The Peranakan community in Malaysia are renowned for their distinct culture which is celebrated in various ways. In celebration of the upcoming “Treasures of the Peranakan World & Straits Chinese” asset auction, here’s our second stop at another important aspect of the Baba Nyonya culture – the literature and art.

Although almost all aspects of the Baba Nyonya culture are unique to the community, one that is well-known and celebrated by all is the Peranakan Malay. A form of adapted pidgin Malay, this distinctive language possesses the Malay linguistic foundation, on which many select Hokkien words are incorporated.

“The Peranakans also adopt many Malay aspects of culture and language to enrich their unique niche existence in the larger Malay milieu harmoniously, like their Dondang Sayang (love sonnets), Bangsawan (theatre), Pantuns (proverbs), betel nut chewing social habit and of course their exotic blend of cultures in their culinary arts and cooking,” says Henry Bong, the guest curator of the upcoming asset auction.

The public sale will feature six sets of rare books entitled ‘Chrita Dulu Kala’ written in the endangered Peranakan Malay and a painting of Tun Tan Cheng Lock by the renowned Low Kway Song, a prominent artist of Peranakan background.
