Of Yeti Cup and Fairy’s Tears

A visionary bar looks to the past for a fantastical future.

If you are agreeable to bars and/or still breathing, chances are, by now you have already heard of AD Bar, the medieval-themed nightspot making waves in Kuala Lumpur. Short for Anno Domini Bar, the hidden cocktail bar looks for inspiration from the Middle Ages in decorating its interior. However, don’t go in expecting a rowdy tavern with beer swooshing everywhere, for the sophisticated spot prides itself on encouraging comfortable conversations among patrons.

The medieval-themed interior of AD Bar.

At the risk of sounding corny, good things really do come for those who put in the effort. Or in this case, those who are able to climb the flight of stairs and locate the right door to open (there is a decoy door!). Once you’re inside though, inspired ambience and friendly staff welcome you. The medieval décor enchants in the subtle way that it is presented – nothing is too grim or too loud, including the bar’s eclectic music.

A fireplace greets you as you enter.

According to the founders of AD Bar, the unique medieval concept was chosen because of its timelessness – an establishment au courant will soon become au passe. The theme was also chosen due to the feeling of fantasy that it invokes; something that we often see in movies but not able to experience in real life, unless you walk into this bar of course. The furniture and accessories needed to complete the look were mostly customised while some were also sourced from aspiring local vendors, including the skull-encrusted mug and the skeleton goblet AD Bar is famous for.

The infamous Yeti Cup.

Playing up to the feudal fantasy leitmotif of the bar are the wide selection of cocktails offered in five different categories: refreshing, fruity, spicy, potent and creamy. Bearing whimsical names that are sure to stay in your minds long after the taste fades away, the cocktails are concocted with a Malaysian twist as well as Western influence and will keep you coming back for more. Some of the mischievous drinks on the menu include the Yeti Cup, The Barbarian and the delicate Fairy’s Tears.

Customers could also request for customised drinks from the bartenders.
