Pop-up art space fosters craftsmanship and DIY culture in downtown George Town.
They say once you get bitten by the elusive ‘travel bug’ you can never stop exploring. Well if there were another equivalent insect for the art scene, Nicole Yap of The Art Assembly surely have been swarmed by them.
With a passion for art and thirst for abstract exploration, Nicole is a shy lass, preferring to let her work speak for herself. By work I mean her tireless effort of stringing together one workshop after another to further enrich the art scene of Penang and widen the perspective of people of all backgrounds.
Essentially The Art Assembly is a collective effort, a creative space run by artists for artists. With an emphasis on art, craftsmanship and DIY culture, the small corner in Hin Bus Depot welcomes everyone to learn more.
The aforementioned small corner is called The Warehouse, and the pop-up art gathering is currently underway with a myriad of interesting studio mates, such as paper conservator BooKoo, who has opened a library of rare vintage books, Rumput Rumpai and their locally farmed herbal teas as well as Utile, a leather couture project by Terance Chen. Meanwhile, art collectives like The Secret Hideout and Raksasa Print Studio, and the Malaysian Writers Society are present as contributors at the space too.
Workshops – which The Art Assembly is focused on – are ongoing until 15th November 2017. Find out more about their upcoming workshops and other events at www.theartassembly.com.
p/s: The Art Assembly will be moving to a brand new place after their tenure at The Warehouse so keep track of them via Facebook!
