The Top at Komtar epitomises fun by introducing an entertainment space for everyone in Penang. Age is not a factor when it comes to having fun and since when anyone is too old for dinosaurs? Definitely not us! Here’s how UPPRE spent three solid hours at The TOP, Komtar, living our best life possible!
Believe it or not, the Only World Group Holdings Bhd (OWG) has brought The Top, Komtar out of its slow march to irrelevance with a significant shift leading towards revitalising the once-unrivaled shopping destination with The Top Penang. The new attraction in town houses the largest indoor theme park in Penang, along with a wide array of food outlets and retail outlets too.
Arriving at The Top
Fair warning: It is slightly challenging to find the way to The Top, however, do not not be discouraged. With the help of Waze (or just by inquiry), you can reach Komtar, and via parking at Komtar, you will be directed to The Top by signages at the lift lobby to level 5 and level 6. It is a whole different world once you enter the building as you are welcomed by bright lights and an array of shops and restaurants at every corner. The energy at The Top is truly magnetic, as it immediately hypes up the mood and gets you excited for what’s there to offer.

Playground for the Young and the Old
One of the key attractions here is the Jurassic Research Centre which takes you through an interactive chamber, just like in the movies. It triggers a sense of nostalgia as you go through the ‘center’ where you encounter displays of dinosaur that makes this place entertaining and also very hands-on interactive. Definitely a must-visit in our books!
Jurrasic Reseach Centre is just one of the attractions (there are thirteen altogether) activity centres that come under the umbrella called ‘Avenue of Adventures’. Some of the other attractions include the 5D Sea Explorer, where technology meets underwater and the 7D Planetarium Dome which is an exclusive visual experience. In case you haven’t deduced it yourself, The Top curates its attractions on the basis of learning through entertainment. Science and technology seem to be the common theme revolving around the attractions available — making it an apt amusement centre for parents or educators to bring the young ones on an informative adventure.
Window of The Top
We would be lying if we say that we were coming to The Top just for the amusement park. If anything, the visit to the Observatory Deck and Rainbow Skywalk on level 65 and level 68 respectively was the most anticipated. As we were ascending in the lift to level 65, there was a recorded audio briefing us information of The Top. At level 65, you will go through a standard security check-up and then to a fully air-conditioned space that has more activities for the visitor. A recent addition, Gravityz is the latest lineup at The Top, and ticket for it is between RM79 and RM399. An exciting addition for adrenaline junkies, Gravityz includes flying fox and high-rope course, with the strict supervision of safety officers.
Next, we made our way to the popular Rainbow Skywalk at level 68 – where one gets to experience the open-air Skywalk and look down via the glass from 249 metres above ground. Don’t worry, the area is fully enclosed and perfectly safe for the young ones, and it is worth it as it gives a full 360-degree view of the whole island. It can be daunting at first to be that high up, however, it is remarkable to be able to attain a bird’s-eye view of the island, and it was exceptionally beautiful during golden hour at sunset. Coco Cabana is open for lunch and dinner, and if you fancy a dinner course, it comes at an affordable rate. For more information, check here.
