Strato is an Italian recluse in downtown Kuala Lumpur crafted for intimate brunches.
Among the many things that Troika Sky Dining (TSD) group does best, is throwing the most delicious brunches. Right off the heels of getting a little taste of some of the brunch dishes at Mr Chew’s Chino Latino Bar, we headed to Strato, TSD’s Italian restaurant where pizza, pasta and other staple Italian fares take the forefront. However, we were at the Italian gem in the sky (with great views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline) to taste what Italy has to offer beyond just pizza or pizza. We were there to be surprised at every bite, and boy, we were.
The Strato Sunday Brunch starts light on the taste buds, with ‘Roasted pepper, anchovy and toasted walnut leading the pack of appetisers. The roasted capsicum is perfectly infused with the nutty flavours of the walnut, while the anchovy added a tiny kick to it. Meanwhile the Quail egg sunny side up, roasted asparagus with capers brown butter is Strato’s version of eggs for breakfast, while the butter brought the entire dish together.
The Corguette flowers fritti, pickled zucchini, pesto yoghurt as well as the Grilled tiger prawn with arugula pesto & jalapeno, and the House marinated sardine, peperonata, hazelnut crumbs also make great appetisers and indicate Strato’s wide range of inspirations derived from the Mediterranean country.
The scene-stealer, however, is the eggplant parmigiana with herbs ricotta. The eggplant is almost unrecognisable in the parmigiana batter while the herbs ricotta enhance the dishes’ complete flavour. As for the Raisin ricotta cappelletti in grana padano brodo, it is the perfect little Italian intermission, before we headed to the main course.
For the mains, expect a surf and turf experience a la Italiana, with Octopus ragù, fregola sarda and Lamb shoulder with spiced herbs salsa verde. The Lamb shoulder is cut into small mini bites and goes perfectly with the Roasted honey balsamic baby carrots that come with dill whipped mascarpone. The other noteworthy side dish is the Malfatti with Garlicky tomato sauce—what’s Italian cuisine without tomato, right?
As for the dessert, expect daytime decadence like no other. Comprising Banana Walnut Tiramisu, Apple Ginger Semifredo, and Chocolate Almond Mousse Tart, the desserts are made by the best pastry chef at TSD. Our favourite is the Apple Ginger Semifredo, for its creativity as well as the unique taste that the apple and ginger notes culminate in.
Priced at 120++ per person, the refillable Strato Sunday Brunch is only conducted on the first Sunday of every month. The menu will see little changes here and there every month to keep patrons on their toes. Our review was conducted in the month of June 2018.
