Awang Damit Ahmad Iraga – ‘Perjalanan Utara’ (Northern Journey) 2008 173cm x 173cm acrylic on canvas

Leading the April sale is Awang Damit Ahmad’s Iraga ‘Perjalanan Utara’ 2008. Painted with boundless energy on a monumental sized canvas, this work is based on the theme of the North-East Winds, a wind that blows from China to Sabah. This extraordinary work evokes the changing of seasons, which affects the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen.

Yusof Ghani’s Siri Tari Kabuki, one of the most interesting works of the artist’s acclaimed Siri Tari series, was painted at the tailend of the reprise on 1991-1993. Inspired by abstract expressionist aesthetics, dynamic shapes are intensely released from the human form, crystalizing movements manifested in dance.

Khalil Ibrahim’s Portrait of a Nude is representative of the artist’s early figurative works. Dated 1965, a pivotal year which the artist had just completed his postgraduate studies at the St Martin’s School of Art and Design in London, this painting is one of the best examples during this period.

Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas’s self-portrait will be offered for the first time in auction. In this self-portrait, painted in 1970 when the artist was forty six years of age, we see a man of intensity and steely determination, and in intense contemplation. The features are modelled carefully with fine brushstrokes, and a sense of mystery is evoked with shadows surrounding the face and neck.
