Kim Haus Loft right in the heart of Campbell Street, Penang muses with its rich past, a present that is as authentic as 24K gold (pun intended) and a promising future as an iconic lifestyle boutique hotel —and it certainly does not get any better than this.
Kim Haus Loft is a lot of things than just a boutique hotel — there is a goldsmith museum that pays an homage to the building’s history as a renowned jewelry store in the 80’s and 90s’, an event and performance space that spans throughout the building as well as a health cafe and bakery which prides with home-made nutritious meals and wholesome cakes and pastries.
Diamond in the rough no more, Kim Haus Loft’s strategic location in the heart of Penang is what that makes this place a tourist-magnet. With street food of Campbell Street and Chulia Street within few minutes walk, Kim Haus Loft is accessible and one can hardly miss it as it is located next to the famous Campbell Street Market.
A Wealth of Health at Kim Haus Bakery
Once you enter the hotel, it is truly a sensory overload from sight to smell. “Smell?”, you may wonder, but yes, the glorious smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air is enough to draw passersby into the cafe. Kim Haus’s bakery is a popular joint especially on mornings for their fresh batch of pastries and artisanal loaves of bread.
Also, the menu selections do not disappoint either as the owners believe in healthy and nutritional dishes, without the frills of artificial flavors and unnecessary grime. Our personal favorite was the chicken masala with rice as it was served in the most festive-looking tiffin carrier, along with condiments. The chicken was succulent and paired beautifully with the spicy gravy which tasted authentic. We were told that it was actually a recipe from a Keralan friend of the owners’ who passed the recipe to them, and might we add, it was delicious!
Upon entering the hotel, Kim Haus Loft guides you through their Goldsmith Museum, into their cafe and bakery area, and further into the rest of the premises. Standing 4-stories high, Kim Haus Loft can be summed up as a lifestyle brand as they provide a refined experience for both their walk-in visitors and hotel guests as it takes a good chunk of time just to explore the site. When discussing the highlight of the place, there is no justice focussing on just one key feature. Personally, we found that the Goldsmith Museum is a unique feature on its own.
First of its kind in Malaysia, the museum offers an array of vintage goldsmith tools from different parts of the world. As mentioned in our previous post, the Goldsmith Museum is evidently the historical representation of the building as it was a prominent jewelry store in Penang. The people behind Kim Haus Loft captured the essence of this and used the industrial element of goldsmithery trade as the main theme for the decor and vibe for the whole place.
Aptly named, Gold Bar at Kim Haus is the extension of the cafe area, but much secluded and intimate for private dining option. The amazing feature of the Gold Bar has to be The Vault, which believed to be the biggest vault in Penang, which was left behind by the previous owners. Dating as old as 40 years, Kim Haus utilized this vault by turning it into a private dining room, decked with luxurious decor to match the theme of the restaurant.
Refined and Defined Comforts
Staying in Kim Haus Loft us truly an experience on its own. Adopting a minimalistic yet functional decor, each room is fitted with a private bathroom equipped with a bidet and shower (except private room). There are three types of rooms— private rooms (hostel-style with common baths), standard and studio rooms with an en-suite. The price range falls from RM 70 per night (for the private room); from RM 130 for a standard room and RM 220 onwards per night for the studio.
On top all those amazing features, did you know Kim Haus Loft also can be dubbed as art gallery too? They don’t claim to be, but we dubbed them as one, regardless. Their selections of murals are unique on their own (as seen on the picture above), and they do host various artists like Mike Makatron and Louis Gan to leave their trademark on random areas of the premises. These further add specks of charms to the brand and we just can’t get over it.
Golden Hour at Kim Haus Live
What we loved during our stay was the evening band performance which takes place every night at Kim Haus Live. The energy of the lounge area on the second floor is relaxed and a perfect spot to jam to your favorite music in the company of great friends. Kim Haus specifically designed this area to create a space for the up and coming performers— musicians, singers, bands, comedians, actors and the likes— to add to the lifestyle element they were aiming for their hotel brand. The lounge is well furnished with comfy seats and dim lights and there is also a balcony for guests to relax and take in the night breeze.
A perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Penang and also an exploration of itself, keeping up with Kim Haus Loft was certainly an adventure. The branding as a lifestyle boutique hotel is truly well-thought out and it was evident from the facade of the place. It may look modest from outside, however, Kim Haus Loft certainly does not cease in delivering the luster in hospitality and services, even its history of a former jewelry shop could not measure up. Kim Haus Loft also blurs the lines between business and art by providing a communal space for creatives like mural artists and musicians to express themselves.
